Less Iron, More Barrels [20 Years Of Shale Data Series]

As shale turns 20 years old, we are examining and commeroating a variety of historical trends to illuminate big structural changes in shale’s history (including some ongoing themes that continue reshaping the industry).

Our goal with this new series is several-fold:

  • provide data-driven context for key multi-cycle themes (including several that are still going),
  • foster a deeper understanding of “how we got here” (gotta know where you’ve been to know where you’re going)
  • help illustrate the trajectory arc that defines today’s shale markets
  • stimulate reflection among those that have been around shale for a while
  • educate folks new to the industry on the legacy of innovation they are inheriting
  • bring attention to current risks and opportunities being created by ongoing structural changes
  • and finally, recognize and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of the most incredible industry on the planet – Lower 48 unconventional well drilling and completions
